Facebook and Instagram advertising can introduce a Steam game to people outside Valve’s store, but it should be treated as a measured experiment rather than a guaranteed wishlist machine. Results depend on the game, creative, audience, store page and attribution limits.
Make the store page ready first
Do not pay for traffic until the Steam page clearly shows the game. The capsule, opening trailer moments, screenshots, short description, tags, supported languages and demo should all set consistent expectations. Test the page with players who do not already know the project.
Choose one campaign question
A useful test asks one question: which trailer opening earns qualified visits, which audience responds to the premise, or whether a demo call-to-action outperforms a generic wishlist request. Give each test a fixed budget and end date. Avoid changing creative, audience and landing page at the same time.
Track visits with Steamworks UTM Analytics
Create a unique UTM link for every campaign and meaningful creative variation. Use a consistent naming convention for source, medium and campaign. Valve’s UTM Analytics documentation explains which visits and conversions Steam can report and why privacy protections mean the data will not capture every user.
Keep the advertising platform report and Steamworks report side by side. Clicks are not the same as qualified store visits, and attributed conversions are not the same as all conversions.
Build game-specific creative
- Show recognisable gameplay immediately.
- Use readable captions for sound-off viewing.
- Communicate one player fantasy or mechanic per advert.
- Match the advert’s promise to the store page.
- Make several genuine creative variations, not just colour changes.
Judge traffic quality
Review landing visits, engagement with the store page, demo activity where available, wishlist activity and later sales attribution. Compare cohorts within the same game. Do not import universal cost-per-wishlist or conversion benchmarks from unrelated titles.
Stop placements that attract cheap clicks but no meaningful Steam activity. Scale only after a repeatable test brings visitors who understand the game and continue towards the intended action.
Respect privacy and platform rules
Use the current advertising platform policies, obtain any consent required for tracking, and do not upload customer data without a lawful basis. Avoid misleading scarcity, fake reviews and claims the store page cannot support.
Use a test log
Record dates, audience, geography, placement, creative, spend, UTM link and any store-page change. Add notes for festivals, creator coverage and discounts. The log makes it possible to distinguish an advertising effect from other activity.
Facebook and Instagram setup
Use Meta Ads Manager’s current objectives and reporting rather than advice tied to an old interface. Choose placements deliberately, check the mobile crop and preview every variation. Follow the Meta Advertising Standards and review account permissions before launch.
What success looks like
A successful test produces a clear learning about audience or creative and sends qualified people to Steam at a tolerable cost. If the test cannot answer a decision, do not increase its budget.
